From Kyushu Island, Japan, these pale green, melted-looking beauties grow up to 18 inches long on a trellis. They are heat and humidity loving plants so make a great addition to any greenhouse or extra warm patio with full sun. Their texture is similar to celery with the flavour of a radicchio, hence the name bitter melon. They turn bright yellow when they begin to over ripen but that is a good stage to save the seeds which are coated in a red jelly. Start plants mid-may indoors and wait till first fully develop true leaves to plant out.
