Michelle Wolf has been an ecological gardener for over 25 years. She was involved as a co-chair and coordinator of the organic certification organizations in the Maritimes in the 1990's and early 2000's, and is a former president of Seeds of Diversity Canada. She ran Nova Scotia's earliest 100+ member CSA in the 1990's, hosted many interns over two decades, and helped pave the way for the next generation of women farmers and gardeners to grown their own successful farm businesses. Michelle is no longer operating a commercial farm but in the raised bed gardens, fields, and woods of her family's seven acre farm property, and in her urban gardens in Wolfville, Michelle continues to grow perennial plants, vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, berries, and ornamental plants. She is also an avid wild-crafter, gathering pussy willows, herbs, flowers, and plants throughout the Valley in her favourite hidden and pristine places. Michelle's husband and two teenagers also help with gardening, production, packaging, and attending markets and craft shows together. A family hobby rooted in their shared love of the earth and all things green and growing.
Michelle gardens according to the ecological principles of nature. Lots of compost and mulch, leaf cover in the winter, no annual tillage, no use of chemicals or commercial fertilizers, crop rotations, and additions of composted manure and compost teas to help plants thrive. She uses glass (instead of plastic) whenever possible in her product packaging and has always lived her life, and run her farm business, with a sustainability mindset and the heart of a person who values nature and the wild outdoors.
